GARY MILLEN FOUNDATION

ABOUT

The Gary Millen Foundation was formed shortly after the untimely death in May 2006 of longtime Kennett High School (KHS) teacher and coach Gary Millen. Throughout his life Gary accentuated the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and commitment to excellence and leadership. The Foundation has raised close to $1,000,000 to support the construction of the Gary Millen Stadium, relocation and installation of the Stoney Morrell Memorial bridge and many improvements to fields and athletic facilities at KHS.

BRIDGE THE GAP

The Foundation led the effort to improve access to several of the athletic fields by relocating and installing The Stoney Morrell Memorial Bridge over the gully between the school and the fields. This authentic covered walking bridge not only met a functional need at KHS, but did so by using a historic artifact that has brought wonderful local culture and aesthetic to the campus.

The authentically built 36-foot lattice bridge was generously donated by Story Land. The bridge was on display at the 1999 Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC. Arnold Graton, who is considered one of the nation's foremost covered bridge craftsmen, built the bridge, with the financial support of Stoney Morrell of Story Land. The bridge was moved into place at KHS in September 2015 in a traditional manner using a capstan winch and oxen.

SCORE BOARDS

The Gary Millen Foundation continues to support identified needs at Kennett High School including the purchase and installation of solar panel-powered, wireless, electronic scoreboards for the playing fields in front of Kennett High School.
